Discover and visit Cabris

20 minutes from our locations-06 cottages in Bar sur Loup, this charming hilltop village in the Grasse high country is set in an admirable site. On the edge of the emerging Haute Provence, it looks out over the blue of Lake St Cassien and that of the Mediterranean Sea 20 kilometers away.

Cabris is derived from the Latin capra which means “goat”. but this name especially evokes that of the Marquise de Cabris, Mirabeau’s sister. The revolution was an opportunity for it to strengthen its seigniorial rights, which caused, four years later, destruction by the revolting inhabitants.

Castle ruins : there remains a surrounding wall and a platform, from where the view over the Bay of Cannes is sublime (orientation table), to the left over Mougins and the hills which extend to Le Cannet, the Gulf of La Napoule and the Lérins Islands; opposite, on Peymeinade, the Tanneron and the Estérel; further to the right on Lake St Cassien with the Massif des Maures in the distance.

Grotte des Audides: the cave was inhabited since the dawn of humanity as evidenced by the carved tools, fossils and bones found. Six sinkholes were discovered in 1988. At a depth of 60 m – a third of what has been explored – we discover the beautiful geological landscape of a sinkhole in full concretion activity, with its underground watercourse.

Stramousse and Pomeiret dolmens: megalithic burials erected in the Chalcolithic period.
Chapels: The small village has several chapels: the St Sébastien chapel from the 16th century, the primitive St Jean Baptiste chapel (5th century) restored in the 16th century. On the road to Grasse, the Ste Marguerite chapel (16th century) hosts temporary exhibitions.

Festivities and events in Cabris:

The Donkey’s Call: On Christmas Eve, a big fire is lit in the meadow. Marie (a young girl from the village) mounted on a donkey goes to the church accompanied by the drummer and the galoubet player.

During the crossing of the village, the procession wakes up villagers who call to each other in Provençal announcing the good news: the birth of the savior. Upon arrival at the church, midnight mass takes place.

Saint Roch Festival: Saint Roch is the Patron Saint of the village. In August the village festival takes place. The Arlette Gruss circus has stopped there every year on the meadow for more than thirty years.

Antoine de St Exupéry and Cabris

Impossible to talk about Cabris without mentioning the figure of Antoine de Saint Exupéry.

The family of the author of The Little Prince, Courrier Sud, Vol de nuit, Terre des hommes, owned a house there.

On July 31, 1944, his plane crashed off the coast of Provence, who knows, after a final pass near Cabris
