Visit Gourdon

The village of Gourdon

In an exceptional setting, Gourdon “la Sarrasine”, a village classified as one of the Most Beautiful Villages in France, is perched on a rocky outcrop overhanging the Loup valley by more than 500 metres. This rugged village, with its castle, old restored houses and lively craftsmen’s workshops, is a delightful place to visit.
The village: near the parking lots, Chapelle St Pons (12th century) stands on the former wheat threshing floor, recently converted into a medieval garden featuring dozens of Mediterranean species. The ramparts lead to the Place du Portal and then to the village. Gourdon’s stores are brimming with the work of passionate craftsmen: glassmakers, silk painters, painting galleries, perfume designers, soap makers and gingerbread makers adorn the narrow streets with a thousand colors and scents. It’s hard not to succumb to the temptation of a little souvenir gift.
Take Rue des écoles, which leads to Chapelle Ste Catherine and Gourdon’s oldest house, Maison du Chevalier, whose door is adorned with wood-carved foliage and whose façade features a handsome sundial. St Vincent’s church, built between the 10th and 12th centuries, contains an original font and relics of St Vincent, St Luce and St Just. Under the high altar, tombs of several Gourdon lords. Finally, enjoy panoramic views over the Bay of Cannes and the Côte d’Azur from the Italian border to the Massif des Maures, with Corsica on the horizon.
