Just 27 km north of Nice, via L’Escarène, discover Lucéram, one of the most beautiful medieval villages in the Alpes-Maritimes, located 1h15 from our vacation rentals – www.locations-06.fr. Nestled in the Paillon valley, Lucéram is a fortified medieval village overlooking a verdant landscape typical of the Nice hinterland. Perched above a loop of the Paillon, it was once a strategic stronghold on the ancient Salt Road. In the Middle Ages, Lucéram was a seigneury dependent on the County of Provence. Lucéram: A remarkable historical heritage

Once crowned by a castle, today the village retains : a cylindrical tower with machicolations, pierced by archways, as well as the remains of its crenellated fortified enclosure dating from the XIIᵉ and XIIIᵉ centuries. Access is via a maze of steep, narrow streets, but the effort is well worth it. Along the way, you’ll admire :

beautifully restored Gothic houses,
buildings in local grey stone,
arcades, vaulted passageways and antique doors with dated lintels,
fountains, an old bread oven,
and the church of Sainte-Marguerite d’Autriche, a listed historic monument.

What we love most of all is coming to Lucéram for its famous Circuit des Crèches, a not-to-be-missed event organized for almost 30 years, from late November to early January. At this time of year, the medieval village is transformed into a veritable fairytale Christmas setting ✨ Hundreds of nativity scenes are scattered everywhere: in alleyways, on windowsills, in cellars, on shelves or behind ancient doors…
