The village of Biot

Visiting The village of Biot

Here’s a nice discovery idea: Biot which is a town located in the Alpes-Maritimes department, within the Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur region, whose inhabitants are called Biotois. The Sophia Antipolis technology park (the largest in Europe) occupies approximately 1/3 of the municipality’s territory.

I like to walk there, especially on Tuesday morning when there is the market.

This small Provençal village is very pretty and it is interesting to discover its streets, its houses with colorful facades, its vaults, its church, its views of the sea.

Biot is famous for several reasons.
First of all its craftsmanship and in particular since 1956 with blown glass. Its specificity: bubbled glass, the technique of which was initiated by the engineer Éloi Monod, who subsequently trained a whole generation of craftsmen and artists. Today, works of glass art not only make the village famous, but also its pride. Which largely earns it the label of “ville et métiers d’art”.

La verrerie de Biot

You can, for example, visit the well-known Verrerie de Biot, the particularity of which is that there is a workshop which is entirely open to visitors. We can therefore see all the different tasks involved in creating a glass object. It’s fascinating!
It should be noted the presence of other artisans such as sculptors or people who work leather.

The Brague Park

Then Biot is known for the Parc de la Brague which is located between Biot and Antibes.
There are many historical remains represented there such as old mills, millstones, the cinerite quarries of the Pierres à Four or signs of the Roman presence.
The park presents a great diversity of Mediterranean landscapes (pine forests, scrubland, oak groves, cistus, myrtles).

The Fernand Léger National Museum

Finally the name of Biot is associated with the name of Fernand Leger whose museum can be visited. A pioneer on the Côte d’Azur, this museum is one of the main monographic museums dedicated to a modern artist. Located at the foot of the Provençal village of Biot, it owes its reason for being to the regular arrival of the artist since 1949 and to the donation of paintings from his wife in 1969.
