Grasse, world perfume capital

Grasse, Capital of perfumes

Grasse, capital of perfumes

Les Savoir-faire liés au Parfum de Grasse was inscribed on 28.11.2019 as an Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity by UNESCO.

This means that three essential aspects of knowledge about perfume plants and their production are distinguished:

  • Growing perfume plants,
  • Knowledge of raw materials and their processing,
  • The art of perfume composition

Since at least the 14th century, perfume plants have been cultivated and blended in a craft environment dominated by the tannery industry in the Grasse region…

Cultivating plants, knowing the raw materials, knowing how to transform them and then knowing how to make a perfume requires a wealth of knowledge ranging from the world of horticulture and farming to that of craftsmanship and today industry.

The people of Grasse and their neighbors have become specialists in this field, and continue to improve their processes.

A visit to the fields of perfume plants and perfume factories in the Grasse region is very interesting.

And to give you an idea of what perfumes represent in Grasse, I’ll let you listen to Jérome Viaud, Mayor of Grasse.
