The beautiful medieval village of Cagnes sur Mer

Today, I am going to tell you about the beautiful medieval village of Cagnes sur Mer located just 20 minutes from our holiday apartments and villas in Pays de Grasse. Here’s what Google says.

Cagnes-sur-Mer is a French commune located in the Alpes-Maritimes department, in the Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur region. It is part of the Nice Côte d’Azur metropolis. Its inhabitants are called Cagnois.
If Cagnes sur mer has 50,000 inhabitants, only 650 of them live in the medieval village.
The old village, known as “Haut-de-Cagnes”, is truly a beautiful medieval village located at the top of the castle hill. it was classified as a “historic landmark” in 1948.

We like to walk in its streets because it is a very beautiful village which has managed to preserve the tranquility of village life, outside the noise and hustle and bustle of the seaside of the Côte d’Azur and yet located so near the coast.
We love its recently renovated church, admiring the patina of past centuries, its stones steeped in history, its shaded, narrow and flowery streets, unusual views of the Mediterranean and the Mercantour. Everything conspires to retain the visitor in search of authenticity.nnDominating the old village, the Grimaldi castle (the Grimaldis of Antibes, distant cousins of the Princes of Monaco) has housed the Museum of Modern Art and Ethnography of the city, and a museum dedicated to the olive tree.

Haut-de-Cagnes has managed to both preserve the mystery of the strongholds of Provence and amaze the visitors who visit it. We love the maze of steep streets paved with pebbles or tiles, the arched passages, the flowered staircases, the unusual viewpoints, the artists’ studios. Haut-de-Cagnes reveals itself at every step.

Many artists’ galleries occupy old cellars and you can visit the Picasso Museum. But Pablo Picasso is not the only one to have brought the old Cagnes sur Mer to life. Renoir, Soutine, Modigliani, Ziem, Klein fell in love with it, without forgetting Inspector Maigret’s father, Georges Simenon, who lived for a long time in a tiny 25m² house at 96, Montée de la bourgade.

The discovery of Cagnes sur Mer is an idea for a visit just 30 minutes from our lodges. And after this visit, nothing better than savoring the pleasures of the nearby Mediterranean Sea.
